Infographic: The 5 Biggest GDPR Fines To Date
Since the introduction of the GDPR regulations in 2018, companies have had an increased responsibility to protect the data of their employees, clients, and collaborators. Breaching the GDPR violations can prove to be a very costly mistake, since the potential fines for doing so are substantial – even for large companies.
Despite GDPR having been in force for only a short period of time, its impact on the business world has been significant, as most businesses have had to introduce new data protection processes, and hire employees whose role is entirely dedicated to ensuring user data is properly collected, stored, and (if necessary) deleted.
Even though most businesses have generally adapted fast to the changed regulatory environment, a number of very large companies, who will have been fully aware of the regulations (and of the potential penalties for breaking them), have been found responsible for some serious breaches of the required data protection protocols.
This has resulted in some enormous fines being handed out, and in this infographic, we’ve outlined the 5 biggest ones so far.
As illustrated by our data, the sheer size of the figures involved means that companies who do not correctly adhere to the GDPR regulations are risking not only their reputations, but even their future as a business. In these instances, responsible managers should take action – both by improving the company’s practices, and by embedding a culture of compliance within the organisation.
In fact, company culture is particularly important. As Wendy Sellers from The HR Lady says, ‘culture runs the show’, meaning that businesses should prioritise creating a GDPR-compliant culture throughout every area of a company, in order to ensure they don’t end up on infographics similar to this in future!
